Do I have to live in Pierce County and/or have a library card to participate?
No, living in Pierce County or having a Pierce County Library card is not required to participate in Sumner Reading activities. Prizes must be picked up in person at a library location (while supplies last).
Do I have to read certain things?
No, you can read anything you like! Reading any genre or format, including ebooks, graphic novels, magazines, and zines; reading with or to children; even listening to audiobooks, all count as hours on your summer reading log.
Tell me more about Summer Reading and how it works.
Summer reading programs began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children to read during their summer vacation, use the library and develop the habit of reading. The benefits to readers in a summer reading program include:
encouragement that reading become a lifelong habit
reluctant readers can be drawn in by the activities
children maintain their reading skills during summer vacation
events and programs draw people of all ages to libraries to build community and have fun
